The vibrant Pacific sport of Kilikiti is coming to the Cello Basin Reserve for the second time ever on Saturday 1 March, with the Pacific Health Plus’ Kilikiti at the Cello Basin Reserve.
Kilikiti, originating from the islands of Samoa, is a bat-and-ball sport reminiscent of cricket but infused with Pacific flair. Its arrival in 2024 at the Cello Basin Reserve was a significant moment for the local Pacific community, Kilikiti and sports enthusiasts alike.
The 2024 version of this event was the first time Kilikiti featured at an international cricket ground. Cricket Wellington, in partnership with the Wellington Samoa Kilikiti Association, launched a first-of-its-kind Kilikiti club competition in 2025.
"The inaugural 2024 Kilikiti at the Basin event attracted more than 4,000 people, Pacific communities and the wider cricketing community," said Faamatuainu Le’ausàlilò Lupematasila Dr Sadat Muaiava, Organising Committee member and Chair of the Wellington Samoa Kilikiti Association.
"This sport not only showcases the rich cultural heritage of the game and its people but also promotes togetherness on and off the field."
The 2025 event will feature eight teams over the day. The men’s game will see the Hutt Valley All Stars vs Porirua United Kilikiti Club, the women’s game will feature the Taema Warriors vs Tilafaiga Titans, and the two new additions of college games will see St Mary’s Girls College v Porirua College Girls team and the boys’ game will see St Patrick’s Silverstream v Naenae College.
Each player and team are ready to showcase their skills and passion for Kilikiti. Spectators can expect a fun atmosphere filled with music, dance, and the energy that Kilikiti is known for.
"Cricket Wellington is excited to welcome everyone to the Cello Basin Reserve for a day filled with sportspersonship and cultural celebration," added Frankie Stewart, Diversity and Inclusion Lead at Cricket Wellington.
"It's an opportunity for people of all backgrounds to come together, enjoy the game, and learn more about the traditions behind it."
The event will also include food stalls offering delicious Pacific cuisine, cultural performances, and activities for the whole family. Whether you're a seasoned cricket or Kilikiti fan or experiencing the sport of Kilikiti for the first time, there's something for everyone to enjoy at the Cello Basin Reserve.
