Club Cricket Review - 14 December 2024


Another weekend of big results in the ROBLAWMAX Senior Men and Women's Division 1 competitions.

Starting with the Ewen Chatfield Trophy it was Taita who went back to the top of the ladder with a comfortable win by six wickets to go two from two against their local rivals in 50 overs this season. Nick Greenwood making 53 for the hosts on the way to victory. Logan van Beek in a rare apperance for the men in red made 41. The pick of the bowlers was again, Nick Greenwood with figures of 3/32 for Taita. At Kilbirnie Park Easts earned a big win over Vic Uni by 13 runs. Setting a target of 247/8 in their 50 overs they managed to bowl VUW out for 234 in reply. Nick Kwant (63) and Henry Wells (47) got things off to the perfect start with a 111 run partnership at the top of the order with Harry Lancaster also making 43 in the lower order for the home team.

For Vic, it was an all round performance from Dylan Mcardle scoring 54 with the bat having produced figures of 4/32 in the first innings. Up in the hills at Nairnville Park it was 1st v 3rd as Onslow entertained Karori. Onslow getting the win by 64 runs. Onslow making 220, bowled Karori out for 156 in reply sending Onslow into second place behind Taita, dropping Karori to 3rd.  For Onslow it was a fifty to skipper Sam Keegan (51) with both Daniel Rose and Elliot Seddon picking up 3 wickets. For Karori it was the captain Kevin Weerasundara who put in the yards scoring 53 with the bat having earned figures of 4/40 with the ball. Matt Rowe also picking up 4 wickets for Karori.

 

In the division 2 Hazlett trophy, it was wins for Wainuiomata, Petone and Upper Hutt. At Bryan Heath Park it was a superb performance from the hosts, Wainui chasing down 259 set by Johnsonville to win by 5 wickets. Batting contributions from Ryan Jackson (48), Craig Foster (72) and Jackson Hemingway (49) getting the nui the victory. Jackson Hemingway also picking up 4 wickets with the ball. Sean Wakelin made 51 for Johnsonville. At Naenae Park, Petone got home by 18 runs in a tight affair with the home team, Naenae. Jack Gaskin making his second 100 of the season for Petone in another fantastic batting performance, making 100 not out off 108 balls supported by Nicko Ward with 42 not out. Anthony Pietersz made a telling 96 for Naenae in a chase that almost got them home. Finally to Linden Park where another run fest insued. Norths  making 272 with Upper Hutt chasing down the target successfully in 48.3 overs to get the win by 4 wickets. 50s to Shiel Gandhi (73) and Joseph Todd (56) for Norths, with figures of 4/43 for Upper Hutt skipper Bhavik Patel. With the bat, Patel continued to set the example with 85. Dylan Blignaut (52) and Lachie Bailey (62) also making telling contributions with the bat to keep up Upper Hutt's impressive start to the season and maintaining their lead at the top of the Hazlett trophy heading into round 8. Below the leaders, Petone sit second, five points behind Upper Hutt on 21 with North City in third on 15. Johnsonville after their defeat to Wainui now sit bottom of the table on 5 points, three behind Wainui on 9.

 

In Women's Division 1 it was another weekend where results flipped the table on it's head yet again. Wins for Upper Hutt over North City, Johnsonville over Petone and Collegians over City Suburbs certainly weren't expected based on recent form. At Trentham Memorial Upper Hutt beat Norths by 7 wickets in a statement win against the competition leaders. Performances across the board from the Upper Hutt Women in securing victory. At Petone Rec, Jville's Gemma Sims was the top performer with 42 out out at the top of the order to give Jville a tight 9 run win over defending champions Petone. At Karori Park Collegians picked up their first win of the season lifting themselves off the foot of the table and above their opposition on run rate. Having set a target of 146 in their 20 overs, they bowled City Suburbs out for 112 to win by 32 runs. Paige Loggenberg picking up figures of 4/11 in a match winning performance with the ball for Collegians to rip through the City Suburbs middle order. Earlier with the bat it was notable contributons from captain Katrina Mairs with 33, and Loggenberg again (43) setting the competitive and what proved to match winning target for Collegians. Lily Campbell (22) and Eva Hay (20) with cameos in support. The T20 table has Norths still on top with 14 points, one back is surprise package, Johnsonville on 13 with Petone and Upper Hutt in 3rd and 4th on 9 points each. City Suburbs are now bottom on 5 points with Collegians above them on the same points by virtue of a higher run rate. All to play for as we move to the final weekend of club cricket before the Xmas break.

 

In the men's reserve grades it was wins for Taita, Upper Hutt, Eastern Suburbs and Onslow in division 3. While in division 4 it was wins for Sri Lankan Sports Club Premiers, Petone Reserves, North City 2nd XI and Sikh Sports Club. Both divisons now approaching the business end of their 50 over competition with the 50 over final scheduled in the New Year for Sunday, Jan 26.
